The Leather Research Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati, U.S., is offering a series of leather related training and educational courses throughout 2018.
On April 4-5, the two-day Leather Orientation Course will take place at the LIA Leather Research Laboratory on the campus of the University of Cincinnati and will cover a wide range of leather related issues such as physical structure, species identification, hide supply, wet-end and finishing operations, regulations, testing and customer acceptance issues. Attendees will be given an in-depth tour of the laboratory and will be provided a book with various leather samples to take home and use as a reference.
Now in its second year, the ‘Raw Hide to Crust’ course will be offered in conjunction with the American Leather Chemists Association (ALCA) and the USDA Eastern Regional Research Center (ERRC). The course uses the text from the ALCA Correspondence Course and draws on industry experts to give participants the skills necessary to transform raw hides into one of nature’s most beautiful materials. The hands-on course will use the pilot tannery at the USDA’s ERRC facility and is designed to be completed over two weeks. Week one ‘Raw to Wet-Blue’ section will be held May 14 - 18 and week two ‘Wet Blue to Crust’: on July 16 – 19.
