ILM 2018 Tanner Business Confidence Survey results unveiled

The market leading September-October 2018 edition of ILM has now been published in print and on its digital app for apple and android devices. The latest edition reveals the results of its annual tanner survey reflecting the mood of the tanning industry in 2018. 

Each year ILM surveys the global tanning industry to provide a snapshot of the current mood of the industry and how optimistic or not it is feeling. A record number of tanners responded to the 2018 survey which took place in July. There were a number of interesting responses to the questionnaire this year, which also featured a number of new questions centred around e-commerce and some of the mega-trends impacting on the industry.

This is the fifth edition of the business confidence survey and allows ILM to compare results previous tanner responses.

The full set of results can be found in the latest edition of International Leather Maker (ILM) but here is a taste of some of the results:

  • The number of tanners reporting poorer sales and turnover in 2018 compared with 2017 increased.
  • In general, tanners were less optimistic about the market than they were a year ago.
  • 57% of tanners surveyed expressed concern about consumers switching away from leather to other materials.
  • Almost 80% of those that responded to the survey believe that the leather industry is coming under attack by some NGOs and in the mainstream/social media.
  • Over three-quarters of tanners surveyed believe that the leather industry needs to do a better job of marketing itself.
