U.S. based Modern Meadow, which has over a dozen patents and grows biofabricated materials in a lab from skin cells that produce collagen, will discuss how its innovation in cellular agriculture could be applied to leather at the upcoming Leather & Sustainability in Retail Conference taking place in central London on November 15.
Susan Schofer, Vice President Business Development, will be presenting and will cover topics such as what the Company is looking to achieve and how the technology behind its material will deliver on this; how its material could be applied to the leather sector; potential environmental sustainability and performance characteristics the material may have and the challenges it has been designed to overcome. Susan Schofer will also take part in the panel discussion giving delegates the opportunity to ask her their questions directly.
About Susan Schofer
Susan Schofer is an experienced product development leader with over 12 years of industry experience in biotechnology and new materials development. Prior to Modern Meadow, she spent ten years of her career in Silicon Valley, where she held roles both in Research and Development, as well as in product development, product management, and commercialisation of new materials. Schofer has experience in all aspects of strategic partnerships, including business development, alliance management, and cross-functional team leadership to deliver products from initial ideation to the market. She received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Brown University and her Ph.D. in organometallic and inorganic chemistry from Caltech. She was a National Science Foundation International Postdoctoral Fellow at Stockholm and Uppsala Universities.

About the conference
Jointly co-organised by ILM and Eurofins|BLC, the Leather & Sustainability in Retail Conference 2018 is predicted to be a popular event with attendees from across the leather industry. A key theme of the conference will include ‘sustainable raw materials’, and the event will touch on topics such as; innovation around raw materials for leather, uses for waste materials within the leather value chain and circular economy. This year’s conference will also be considering new materials coming to market and look at transparency and traceability of production within existing processes.
