Several piles of a 'mystery material' were deposited by the tide at beaches in at least eight different locations in the North East of Brazil.

On October 24, surprised by the volumes and bad odours, some residents of Maceió, Brazilian state of Alagoas, reported seven heavy piles of hides found on a beach to the local Biota Institute of Conservation. However, the origin of the material has not yet been confirmed. "It is a very resistant material, highly elastic. It has a bad smell, however, we cannot say if it is of animal origin”, Bruno Stephanis, President, Biota, told local media.

Several other rectangular piles were found on the coast of another eight municipalities in Alagoas. It is believed the packages, which look like pre-cut leather, have been released by some ship in high sea.

Investigations are underway to determine the origin of the material.
