U.S. officials have travelled to Beijing for another round of trade talks starting on May 1.
Full day discussions, led by U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, are taking place in Beijing before He travels to Washington in the following week for another round of talks, which are expected to end negotiations. Steven Mnuchin, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, said he had a “nice” working dinner the night before with Liu He. Both nations have cited progress on issues such as intellectual property and forced technology transfer. However, some familiar with the matter question whether and when U.S. tariffs on US$250 billion worth of Chinese goods will be removed, with some claiming it will probably be among the last issues to be resolved. Allegedly, U.S. President Donald Trump said he may keep some tariffs on Chinese goods for a “substantial period”. A deal is expected to be announced by mid-May.
