The European Commission has agreed a €50 million exceptional aid fund to help the struggling Irish beef sector.
Reportedly, the Irish government is to match the figure, bringing the total potential aid package to €100 million. The European Commission said the fund is justified as Brexit-related uncertainties have caused a substantial market disturbance for beef farmers in Ireland. Joe Healy, President, Irish Farmers Association (IFA) told local media that “beef farmers have suffered savage price losses due to Brexit uncertainty and it is a welcome development that the EU Commission has recognised this and responded to the proposal”.
