The designer was one of the key names in French Haute Couture.
Emanuel Ungaro died in Paris on December 21, aged 86. According to family sources, he had been in poor health for the past two years. Ungaro, who quit the fashion scene in 2004 but continued to inspire the new generation of designers, was born in the French town of Aix-en-Provence in 1933 and was the second of an Italian immigrant family of six children. His father, who was a tailor, introduced him to the trade.
Ungaro arrived in Paris in 1956 at the age of 23 and trained with Spanish couturier Cristobal Balenciaga before launching himself into ready-to-wear, with a line for women, followed a few years later by a line for men, alongside haute couture. The Emanuel Ungaro fashion house was bought by the Ferragamo Group in 1996.
