Innovative systems that allow leather thickness to be significantly reduced and therefore meet the low emissions targets in electric vehicles will be the topic of a presentation given by Rodolfo Ampuero, Sales Manager Automotive at leather chemical specialist TFL, during this year’s ILM Automotive Leather Supply Chain Conference, which takes place at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, on May 12.
In his presentation “Light weight leather to meet cars’ low emissions targets in special electric vehicles”, Ampuero will shine the light on the latest innovations in light weight leather development. In line with the goals agreed in the 2015 Paris Agreement - to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change - the reduction of emissions is pushing the automotive industry to find alternatives which, among other factors, involves the reduction of material weight. A reduction of petrol consumption of 5.6% (passenger vehicles) or 6.3% (commercial vehicles) can be achieved by reducing 10% of vehicle weight. In the case of electric vehicles, 10% less weight facilitates an increase of battery life by 13.7%, which means that the automotive industry is investing heavily in R&D to reduce vehicle weight. For many years the leather industry has been seeking a reliable solution to reduce weight and to reach the target of 700 grams per square feet or less.
Ampuero will give exclusive insights into an innovative system that the company has developed and which allows the reduction of leather thickness to below 1mm without damaging the physical properties. Using this system in the manufacturing process provides a very light weight leather (600 grams per square foot) and a characteristic “rubbery” haptic, achieving the so-called “zero break” with no "bagginess” effect and fulfilling automotive specifications with regards to emissions, smell, fogging, etc.
