Uruguay cattle slaughter comes to a halt

The Uruguayan units of meatpackers Marfrig Global Foods and Minerva stopped production for a few days in early April as workers walked out amid talks of wages and COVID-19 protection.

On April 3, a labour union in Montevideo ordered a halt in slaughter, affecting the processing units of Brazil headquartered Minerva and Marfrig. Marfrig has five plants in Uruguay and is the largest meatpacker and exporter in the country, employing 3,500 people. The workers were expected to resume activities on April 8.
