Preliminary data shows that in June, Brazil exported US$245 million worth of hides and skins as tanned, crust and finished leather. For the first half of 2014 the accumulative total was US$1.46 billion in leather export sales.
The figures, according to preliminary information from the Department of Foreign Trade – Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC), with further analysis from the Department of Intelligence at the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB), show that Brazilian leather exports continue to rise compared with 2013.
Exports in June 2014 represent an increase of 23.8% compared with the same period in 2013. In comparison with May, it showed a decrease of 5.3% in export values. In the yearly accumulative numbers Brazil’s tanners managed an overall 23% rise in the first half of the year compared with the previous year.
The leather industry’s contribution to Brazilian total exports has stayed at 1.3%. With a surplus of US$2.37 billion in June, the total Brazilian trade balance had its deficit reduced to US$2.49 billion.
