Why it is our ethical duty to use leather

Stephen Sothmann, President of the Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA), is the first of three presenters in the upcoming free-to-attend webinar ‘Understanding raw materials for the tanning industry’, organised by theSauerReport in association with ILM, to be broadcast on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at 3pm CET (2pm UK time). 

The presentation, titled ‘Why it is our ethical duty to use leather’ looks at the originals of leather as a by-product of the meat industry and outlines the typical lifecycle of U.S. cattle, dispersing with common misconceptions about greenhouse gases being linked to cattle farming and looking at what would happen if the U.S. went 100% vegan. Sothmann concludes his findings by pointing out that due to the rise of synthetics, millions of precious hides are being wasted and dumped into landfill every year, and stresses the importance and ethical responsibility to continue to push for leather as a key commodity.

Stephen Sothmann is the President of the LHCA. In this role, he represents and promotes the interests of the U.S. hides and skins industry before a wide-range of stakeholders, including U.S. and foreign governments, industry trade associations, media outlets, and other organisations related to global leather production and trade. A native of Indiana, he received a Bachelor of Arts from Purdue University, a Master of Business Administration from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, and a Juris Doctor from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.
