After Aston Martin, the luxury British marque could cut around 1,000 jobs in the UK, a quarter of its workforce, as it is impacted by declining sales due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Owned by Germany’s Volkswagen Group since 1988, Bentley was founded in the UK in 1919. Worldwide sales increased 5% to 11,000 units in 2019, but the luxury carmaker has struggled to be profitable in recent years. Despite having completed a turnaround plan in 2019, the company is reported to have been severely impacted by lower sales due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to the UK Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT), Bentley delivered 20,000 new cars in the UK in May, down 89% year-on-year and representing the worst May performance since 1952.
Iconic British car brand Aston Martin also plans to cut 500 jobs as car sales fail to pick up. Read more here.
