The online luxury fashion retail platform has launched a sustainability calculator, which aims to help buyers to better understand the impact on the environment of the materials they are buying.
Shoppers are invited to use Farfetch’s fashion footprint tool; “Want To Shop More Sustainably? Use our fashion footprint tool below to see how you can help the planet with your wardrobe”. By clicking on the link, they can learn about which materials reduce the environmental impact the most. Customers can also explore the benefits of incorporating pre-owned pieces into their wardrobes. For this, Farfetch has also released a report titled; “Understanding the environmental savings of buying pre-owned fashion”, in which it claims that luxury resale represents a market of over US$24 billion and that t is growing four times faster than the primary luxury market, and the two main drivers spearheading this growth are online resellers and consumer interest in sustainable fashion.
"According to the report, each pre-owned purchase could potentially save more than 3,000 litres of water and 22 kilos of carbon dioxide, and help to reduce demand for new items by about 60%, hence, also reducing waste. “Calculating the environmental impacts of fashion items is significantly influenced by multiple external factors, and robust analysis requires specific and in-depth life-cycle data that takes into account all impacts across a product's life, such as sourcing raw materials, primary and secondary manufacturing, distribution, retail, use and end of life”, says the report.
