The new leather goods workshop located in Puy-de-Dôme, French region of Auvergne, will be the luxury Group’s 22nd production site and is expected to create 250 jobs.
Hermès said the new leather goods workshop will join the existing Maroquinerie de Sayat to form the Group’s seventh leather goods hub, ultimately employing more than 500 artisans. “In a spirit of mentoring that places the transmission of know-how and artisan culture at its heart, the site will draw on the expertise of the teams at the Maroquinerie de Sayat, which has been established in Auvergne for almost 20 years”, said the French luxury brand. The first intake of trainee artisans is to commence their apprenticeships in a temporary workshop in Riom in November 2020.
Since 2010, Hermès has opened nine leather goods workshops and recruited more than 2,500 artisans, bringing the number of saddler-leatherworkers employed by the group to more than 3,800. The Maroquinerie de Guyenne (Gironde) and the Maroquinerie de Montereau (Seine-et-Marne) are to be inaugurated in 2021, and two further workshops; one in Louviers (Eure) and the other in the Ardennes, are scheduled to open in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
