US cattle feed up 5% paired with record high for beef production

Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totalled 11.9 million head on April 1, 2021, 5% higher than the same period in 2020. This is the second highest April 1 inventory since the series began in 1996. Meanwhile, commercial red meat production for the U.S. totalled 5.05 billion pounds in March 2021, up 1% from the 5 billion pounds produced in March 2020.
