ILM podcast: Advances in leather biodegradability and tanning technology

The latest episode of the ILM “View from the top” podcast series features two narrated articles written by ILM Consultant Technical Editor Karl Flowers. It is now available free-to-download and listen to here, as well as via Apple Podcast, Spotify and Deezer.

The episode, titled “Advances in leather biodegradability and tanning technology”, covers two articles: “Biodegradability Claims” and “Effluent developments” published in the March/April 2021 edition of ILM. The articles are narrated by ILM Editor Isabella Griffiths.

The first article covers the biodegradability of leather, focusing on the importance of using the correct terminology when making biodegradability claims, or risk confusing marketing which negatively impacts the public perception of the leather industry.

The second article unpacks the chemical strategies associated with wastewater management and the critical role technological development has played in the leather tanning industry’s pursuit to produce clean wastewater. It showcases three technologies: reverse osmosis crossflow filtration, electrodialysis and microalgae fuel cell technology.
