Jones joined the Northampton Technical College in the 1950s, now known as Institute of Creative Leather Technology, and was best known as senior lecturer in principles of leather manufacture, the chemistry of vegetable tanning agents, the manufacture of heavy leathers, and laboratory analysis. Born in Derbyshire he had studied leather at the Procter Department at the University of Leeds before working briefly in industry.

As an experienced leather chemist he dedicated his career to teaching many generations of students, and will be remembered by large numbers of alumni throughout the world. Jones was a co-author of books on vegetable tanning, and the author of technical papers on vegetable tanning agents and vegetable tanned leathers published in specialist magazines.
