According to Poribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA), a voluntary non-profit organisation, construction works for two modules of the CETP are now complete but the treatment plant is not yet operational meaning that tanneries already operating in Savar are discharging into the Dhaleshwari River, polluting the water and the surrounding land. The progress in building the tannery plants is also very slow.

During a press conference held in Dhaka on September 8, environmental activists have once again urged the Government to cancel the plots allocated to tanners who have failed to relocate their factories from Hazaribagh to the new Savar industrial zone. Other demands include the immediate disconnection of utility services such as electricity, gas and water supply to the tanneries still operational in Hazaribagh.

The association has urged the authorities to take legal action against the tanneries polluting in Savar.
