The new project was presented on April 20 at a workshop organised in Karachi by UNIDO and the PTA (S.Z) Environmental Society. The event was attended by representatives from the federal, provincial and local Government, NGOs, academia, the Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) and the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA).

“The project’s main target will be the tannery industry. We aim to help enhance professional and technical capacities, enable sustainability, further develop the local economy, and increase job opportunities. Water scarcity remains,” said Esam Alqararah, UNIDO Representative in Pakistan. He thanked the Pakistani Ministry of Climate Change, the private sector, and Arif Ahmad Khan, Federal Secretary, for their support.

Guzar Feroz, President of the PTA Environmental Society, commended “the assistance UNIDO has already provided in upgrading existing effluent collection and conveyance systems as well as its comprehensive plan for solid waste management to reduce the carbon footprint of the tanning industry in the Korangi Industrial Area.”
