As correctly reported by ILM, finished leather exports from Pakistan increased by 43% year-on-year for the first quarter of the current financial year, and many media outlets incorrectly reported this as exports of wet-blue or raw hides and the term ‘raw leather’ was incorrectly used.

Amanullah Aftab, Chairman of the PTA, also reminded media in a statement that leather in its unprocessed form, whether wet-blue or raw hides, has been banned for export from Pakistan since 2005.

The Chairman said that these errors in reporting portrayed Pakistan in a negative light, omitting the country’s investments in its leather industry with Italian technology to produce strong finished leather products. He reiterated that finished leather exports to some of the world’s most famous brands contribute significantly to the country’s GDP growth.
