Aiming to promote the Tuscan vegetable-tanned leather, ten selected students and their teachers are taking part in Craft the Leather 2017 representing the prestigious institutions of Bunka Fashion College, Tokyo (Japan); Central Saint Martins, London (UK); Design School, Kolding (Denmark), Fashion Institute of Technology, New York (U.S); Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry, Tokyo (Japan), Hochschule für Künste, Bremen (Germany), Istituto Europeo di Design, Madrid (Spain), Rhode Island School of Design, Providence (U.S.); Royal College of Art, London (UK); and SASK, Sint Niklaas (Belgium).

The project consists of two main phases; a training workshop, held in San Miniato, Italy, on May 7-13, 2017, and the designers’ contest with this upcoming winter.

Just like in the 2016 edition, the group of selected students and their teachers spent a week at the Conservatorio Santa Chiara in San Miniato, the heart of the Tuscan leather district, where they explored the aspects of the veg-tanning process and came into contact with various kinds of leather, experiencing the production practices and the creative process of design. The materials selected at the tanneries are to be used for the final phase of the project: concept and production of a mini-collection of fashion accessories.
