Taylor said: “Traceability is the foundation for transparency, without which all commitments, pledges, systems and tools will never result in meaningful, transformative change and nature-positive outcomes. Traceability has also been a development topic in the leather industry for many years.” 

This new four-year grant program will develop benchmarks and protocols to set a minimum threshold for practices at the farm level and will provide recognition to those farmers who meet or exceed them. About the speakers

Deborah Taylor is the Managing Director of the Sustainable Leather Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation set up specifically to support the leather industry in becoming more sustainable. The purpose of the organisation is to provide a global platform for the benefit of all stakeholders in the leather value chain.

A practitioner member of the Chartered Quality Institute and a certified SA8000 lead auditor, Taylor also currently works as a consultant for the UNECE on the project to “enhance traceability and transparency for more sustainable value chains in the garment and footwear sector”. In addition, she is a Council Member for the Society of Leather Technologists and Chemists.

Mauricio Bauer is Senior Director for Beef and Leather Supply Chains for WWF U.S., with 20+ years of executive corporate experience in agricultural commodities in the United States, Australia and Brazil.

He provides strategic coordination and guidance to coalition partners, including market actors, NGOs, academics and government representatives in the development and execution of WWF’s global beef and leather strategies to eliminate the loss and degradation of tropical and sub-tropical forest ecosystems in Latin America that result from the production of beef and leather.
