As from December, Smit & zoon will start using recycled polyethylene drums, which will be collected, cleaned, and thoroughly checked by the drums supplier.

Depending on the quality, the packaging is to be either reconditioned or collected for recycling. The drums are recycled by regrinding them, resulting in post-consumer resin (PCR). The mixture of PCR and virgin polyethylene ensures a high-quality product, while extending the life cycle of Smit & Zoon’s packaging materials at the same time.

According to the Dutch chemical manufacturer, the recycled polyethylene drums are very similar to their standard drums “but contain up to 65% of PCR granulate, which is equal to a total volume of 370,000kg of granulate per year, or the annual carbon emission of 323 Dutch citizens”. The drums look similar, and tests’ results have proved that they meet Smit & zoon’s quality standards.
