“Sustainability is a major challenge in our industry. Raw materials are still largely extracted from oil and the use of solvents is often required. Finding solvent-free alternatives that are based on renewable raw materials is a major challenge for the coating industry. There are opportunities here for Stahl. As the Green Technology Chemist, it is my job to identify new sustainable technologies and materials and convert them into successful solutions.”
Brouwer will identify new sustainable technologies and materials and convert them into successful solutions for several kind of substrates, not only leather. Stahl has a wide range of solutions covering the entire supply chain for leather, but also a wide range of coatings for substrates such as paper, textile and plastics and last but not least our Polymers portfolio.
Brouwer obtained his PhD in Mathematics and Natural Science at the University of Groningen. As part of his research, he worked on the synthesis of conjugated materials, including biosensors and organic solar cells.
As a Research Chemist within Stahl he helped to develop innovative, waterborne polyurethane products, including Stahl EVO. The Stahl EVO range is the next generation polyurethane coatings, including a water-based EVO topcoat and a DMF(A)-free EVO base. This range is a large step forward towards a more sustainable production process for PU coated fabrics.
