Truworths has announced that 30 of its 57 stores have already reopened and expects 48 to be open by the end of August. Meanwhile, Mr Price closed 111 stores during the unrest but plans for 75% of these to reopen by the end of September.

The riots, which took place across a week in July, left 300 people dead and arson and lotting across the KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces cost an estimated US$3.3 billion in damages.

Despite optimism from retailers, The South African reports that a resurgence of civil unrest could take place this week, after law enforcement officials acknowledged threats from “instigators” and inflammatory social media activity.
