Australian Leather loses trademark battle over Uggs

Australian footwear company Australian Leather’s court appeal against Deckers Outdoor’s footwear brand Ugg, renowned for its sheepskin boots, has been rejected following a four-year legal battle. The company, which considers the sheepskin boot to be a national symbol and “ugg” to be a generic term, sought to have the U.S. trademark rescinded and suffered a US$450,000 loss in court.
