Government close to shutting down Savar tanning complex

The Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry in Bangladesh has moved to implement a recommendation on shutting down the tannery complex in Savar. A parliamentary committee from the ministry on August 23 recommended shutting down the Savar Tannery Industrial Estate (STIE) at Hemayetpur because it does not have adequate facilities to treat the amount of solid and liquid waste generated by the tanners.

Incomplete Savar CETP project causes headaches

ILM reported back in July, based on an article written by the Bangladesh Daily Star, that “the incomplete Hemayetpur CETP caused headaches”. That is clearly the understatement of the decade. I have written over and again that the CETP in the Savar tannery cluster is a total disgrace. Until now nobody in Government and industry alike has been willing to look reality in the eye and take the necessary decisions. Everybody is walking around the cake, without taking a bite out of it.
