Cotance issues open letter against Pinatex award nomination

Cotance has penned an open letter to the European Patent Office (EPO) in response to the inclusion of Piñatex, a material made from waste pineapple fibres, in a contest for the European Inventor Award organised by the EPO, where the Piñatex-patent is registered. Carmen Hijosa, founder of Piñatex, is a finalist and the public vote takes place June 17, 2021. The letter focuses on the sustainability of leather and refutes the promotion of Piñatex as a leather alternative.

How good is our competition?

Are we a lazy industry? I sometimes wonder. Twice in the last two weeks I have been asked about comparative test data to compare leather with synthetics, and as far as I know, as an industry we have no peer reviewed papers which we can use as an industry to fight our case.
