Pollution control authorities inspect Burundi tanneries

As the Lake Tanganyika, the world’s second largest lake by volume, is threatened by wastes being directly discharged from factories and households, local pollution control authorities have carried out surprise visits to factories, including tanneries. 


Water problems persist for Northern Italian tanners

Some tanners in northern Italy are facing real problems in the on-going situation relating water usage and waste treatment. Tanners in the areas of Montebello/Zermeghedo are said to be under extreme control by the authorities. Contract tanners in the area, in particular, have been badly hit and some have been closed all week. 


High levels of chromium found in the river Ganges

High concentrations of chromium from the tanning industry continues to pollute the Ganges River as the National Green Tribunal (NGT) examines deficiencies in the functioning of effluent treatment plants situated in tannery clusters in the area.
