Kanpur tanners fear cluster might not open again

As the tanneries in Kanpur remain closed long after the religious Kumbh Mela festival ended on March 4, some tanners worry the Government will not allow them to open again and many workers are reported to have left the sector.


Illegal discharge of tannery pollutants continues in Jalandhar

Despite the environmental protection measures undertaken by India’s National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the attempt to close 19 tanneries in Jalandhar, Indian state of Punjab, the discharge of tannery pollutants directly into the communal drains is reported to continue.


China introduces new environment tax

Effective from January 1, 2018, China has started collecting an environment tax to better protect the environment and reduce pollutant discharge. The new tax replaces the "pollutant discharge fee" that China had been collecting for nearly 40 years since 1979, and is aimed as a "green" financial and taxation system.
