It is a sad fact that by early December ILM has reported on the deaths of fifteen tannery workers, covering four separate incidents which occurred mainly due to negligence. Historically, the tanning industry has had a poor record in this area and the relocation of manufacturing from developed to emerging countries, where worker health and safety is less stringent, has only served to make matters worse.

Former RSL Sethu tannery workers hold protest

Nearly 150 workers of RSL Sethu Company, a tannery closed down 13 years ago, occupied eight acres of the company’s land at Karugampathur on the outskirts of Vellore on October 27, demanding compensation. The workers leveled the land using earthmovers and put up thatched huts and said they would move with their families and live there until they receive compensation from the company.
