India’s Covid-19 wave could cripple its leather industry

India’s first Covid-19 lockdown was largely successful in terms of curbing the outbreak of the virus, but the economy was crippled in the process. India now faces a devastating Covid-19 crisis, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reluctant to damage the economy further, CNN Business reports, warning that it may get crushed regardless, which will have devastating effects on India's leather industry.

India’s leather exports decline 28.3%

India’s exports of leather and leather products declined 28.3% to U$3.3 billion in 2020-21 compared to US$4.6 billion in 2019-2020, attributed to the impact of Covid-19 on key markets of the EU, the UK and the U.S., according to the Council for Leather Exports.
