More Kanpur tanneries reopen

In what is considered a vital lifeline to Kanpur’s leather industry, 73 more tanneries have been allowed to resume operations by the UP Pollution Control Board (UPPCB). Last week, the board had given permission for 28 tanneries to reopen. Following the order, 101 out of 267 tanneries which faced indefinite closure will now be operational.

Union Minister for water resources Uma Bharati on May 9 asked the tannery owners of Jajmau area near Kanpur to install flow meters at their units to monitor tannery discharges in to the river Ganga.

Green Tribunal team visits Kanpur tanning zone

A team of National Green Tribunal on February 28 inspected tanneries and a secondary waste treatment plant at Wajidpur. The team also collected water samples from factories and hand-pumps installed in Jajmau and Sikhpur village and spoke with local residents.
