Death on the job

It is a sad fact that by early December ILM has reported on the deaths of fifteen tannery workers, covering four separate incidents which occurred mainly due to negligence. Historically, the tanning industry has had a poor record in this area and the relocation of manufacturing from developed to emerging countries, where worker health and safety is less stringent, has only served to make matters worse.

Three people killed in Indian tannery

Three people were killed by asphyxiation on June 13 in a tannery situated in Jajmau, Kanpur. The circumstances of the accident are not clear but according to a senior administrative official, the tannery owners had been previously instructed to provide adequate working materials and equipment to those in charge of cleaning the tanks.
