Consequences of pollution in the tanning industry

Looking back, in many places tannery pollution existed. But times change and it is no longer present. However, in many other places it is still a problem. Now we see that parts of Asia are now tackling the horrible side effects of leather making. But the pollution problem is not only in Asia. It extends into parts of the Middle East, Latin America and across Africa. Much of which is still largely unknown, but I have eye witnessed it myself over the years.

The Split Report

August and September were very interesting for the global tanning industry. We moved from August, a very calm month because of the European summer holidays, to a September that was full of trade fairs this year. As we have highlighted on several previous occasions, fairs are not important places to do direct business, instead they can be defined as meeting points where trends, the mood of the market and new ideas are displayed and discussed.

Shift of tanning in Asia

Looking at wages, which are now so much lower in most Asian countries compared with China. Also, I notice that more and more shoe production is increasingly moving out of China and looking at the attractive possibilities that the China-Asean Free Trade Agreement offers places such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia etc.
