Conditional bail given to SIDCO employees

The Vellore District and Sessions Court, on March 24, granted conditional bail to 11 people, including 10 office bearers of the Ranipet SIDCO Finished Effluent Treatment Company, in connection with the tannery accident in a common effluent treatment plant (CETP) that claimed the lives of 10 workers on January 31.


Investigation into sludge tank deaths begins

Work has started to clean-up an estimated 5,000 tons of waste sludge following an accident at the SIDCO industrial estate in Ranipet earlier this week. The National Green Tribunal has started an investigation into the accident, which claimed the lives of 10 tannery workers.

In the worst ever tannery related disaster in Tamil Nadu, 10 workers were drowned by toxic sludge in the early hours of January 31 at a tannery unit in the Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO) Industrial Estate in Ranipet.

The flood, caused by a breach in the concrete wall of the sludge storage tank of the adjacent Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP), which drowned the workers who were asleep, unaware.
