Tough times for Uttar Pradesh tanners

According to local media reports a sombre mood prevails among the tanners of Uttar Pradesh these days. Pollution problems and months of long lockdowns over two consecutive years have adversely affected the leather industry in the state. The tanneries are also reported to be losing business to neighbouring Bangladesh.


95 Indian tanneries ordered to close due to overflow

India’s Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) has ordered the closure of 95 tanneries in the Jajmau area of Kanpur with immediate effect as Pumping Station Number 3 and the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) are overflowing.


Fate of 700 Kanpur tanners delayed by Tribunal

The National Green Tribunal on January 29 sought more clarification on key issues before deciding the fate of about 700 Kanpur-based tanneries on the banks of river Ganga, termed as “highest sources of pollution” in one of its earlier observations.
