Appreciation for leather must be nurtured in childhood – or it may be too late

The other day, my nine-year-old daughter and I were browsing online stores to search for some winter boots for her. My girl had a very specific idea of what she wanted (a chunky, ankle-length hiking boot style, in case you were wondering), and we checked the usual big brand stores on the lookout for something suitable. When I dismissed a number of shoes she liked because they were not leather, she protested: “But Mummy, leather is from dead animals. That’s bad. I don’t want leather!”

Destruction in the village

It was 4am in the morning that the 250 year old wall was knocked down by an articulated lorry apparently attempting a 3-point turn. This was curious as it was in our village by mistake. We only have 400 residents in our rural hamlet and single lane roads are not suitable for large vehicles. Yet it hurried away after doing about $30,000 worth of damage and more importantly has forced us to demolish the ancient wall.

IULTCS grant for Young Leather Scientists

In keeping with its founding purpose – to encourage technology, chemistry, and science of leather - the Executive Committee of the IULTCS has announced the funding of a leather research grant. The grant will be awarded to a suitable candidate under the age of 30, and for a leather research project to be conducted at a recognised institution in 2015.
