Perundurai SIPCOT to be closed following environmental violations

Ranipet sludge tank collapse kills 10 tannery workers

In the worst ever tannery related disaster in Tamil Nadu, 10 workers were drowned by toxic sludge in the early hours of January 31 at a tannery unit in the Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO) Industrial Estate in Ranipet.

The flood, caused by a breach in the concrete wall of the sludge storage tank of the adjacent Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP), which drowned the workers who were asleep, unaware.
