True impact of tannery closures in Kanpur
In the wake of the Uttar Pradesh (U.P.) state Government’s unfortunate and biased decision to close down all the tanneries located in the leather clusters of Kanpur, Unnao and Banthar for three months, from December 15, 2018 until March 15, 2019, due to the annual ‘Kumbh Mela’ - a Hindu religious congregation of bathing in the river Ganges, which takes place at Allahabad (a city about 200km downstream from Kanpur), has caused widespread outrage and unrest in the leather industry in this region.
