No mystery in UNIDO

The best things in life are free, so we are told; although it is hard to imagine how this applies to the leather industry. For me, it took the unexpected serendipity of a trip to Ethiopia, for it was there I was able to spend an hour with Ivan Král who runs the leather side of UNIDO from his office high in the UNIDO building in Vienna.

Defence is useless unless there is something to promote

As I write this, I am floating away from Budapest. We are recreating a trip done by Jason and the Argonauts with the Golden Fleece (a sheepskin used to collect gold from a river bed in northwest Georgia) as he sailed up the Danube to Vienna: a trip up the Danube from the Black Sea done by many others - Huns, Magyars, Ottomans - mostly with all conquering intent, over the last 2000 years.

Russian leather – a lost opportunity

Over the years, I have sold a lot of leather to Russia but until two weeks ago I had never been there. I went on a brief trip to St. Petersburg, although it was an “accidental” trip as my real plan was to see the Hanseatic Ports of the Baltic. I find the Hanseatic League utterly fascinating.
