Chris Plotts of American Tanning and Leather says the company last offered a bounty in 2007. He says it is not an annual event because he does not want it to become mundane.

According to Plotts, his company will buy anywhere between $6,000 and $8,000 for alligator skins this season, paying $10 to $40 per foot depending on the quality.

Hunters entering the contest must present the proper state-issued alligators tags when presenting their kills for sale.

Alligator hunting season in the US began August 28.
