Responding to the survey, a key barometer for the leather industry, just 27% of tanners said that they already had an e-commerce solution set up for their customers and, with 71% not planning to invest in this area in the future, it is clear that tanners have no plans for significant digitalisation going forward.

The number of tanners who already have e-commerce capabilities was down 4% from 2020, a surprising shift for many who expected the restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic to force many towards offering digital solutions while trade fairs and in-person selling became difficult, if not impossible.

The ILM Tanner Business Confidence survey is now in its eighth year and is the only truly global and neutral annual survey of the tanning sector. ILM is most grateful to those tanners who responded, and a copy of the survey results will be sent to those that took part via the September/October print/digital edition of ILM magazine.
