The associations claim that these are major obstacles for the leather, textile, surgical carpet and sports goods sectors when taking an advantage of opening markets in European Union countries to enhance exports.

Sheikh Saqib Saeed Masood, Chairman PTA said the two SROs would increase the cost of goods from the leather sector by 17% compared with the same products from India and Bangladesh. He said an important value added foreign exchange oriented industry was now becoming uncompetitive in the global market and losing market share because of the high costs of products being exported to the foreign buyers.

Masood requested that the facility to the five sectors eligible for zero rating previously allowed by the government be restored.
