This is a significant change from 2020’s results when, similar to the previous year, just 13% of tanners expected finished leather prices to rise. This year, only 6% expected them to decrease, while 25% forecast no change in the next six months.

This is because costs of raw materials (hides/skins) and chemicals have seen a sharp rise since the lows of the pandemic in mid-2020. As demand is picking up, tanners will look to recoup some of their losses from the last year.

The ILM Tanner Business Confidence Survey is now in its eighth year and is the only truly global and neutral annual survey of the tanning sector. ILM is most grateful to those tanners who responded, and a copy of the survey results will be sent to those that took part via the September/October print/digital edition of ILM magazine.
