Tannery owners, however, insist that they have already invested heavily in a treatment plant, which they claim has never been actually used at its full capacity. The tanners say  that they will not spend additional funds on another unit that may end up like the existing plant. Moreover, they claim that officials have never really started the first treatment plant but just discarded the wastes into the Ganges silently.

During the meeting with the Divisional Commissioner Mohammad Ifikharuddin and the Secretary for Environment and Forests Sanjeev Sharan, the tannery owners rejected the proposal for the new construction works. Sharan replied that their opinions will be considered and asked the officials for a detailed report of the project by June 30.
