Routes 23, 43, 152 and other roads into the Somerset County town were closed to vehicles heading into town while members of the Hartland Volunteer Fire Department stopped traffic and searched for the leak, Capt. Russell Dickey said.

“We received a report of gas in the air about 4:30pm. and went looking for a propane leak,” he said. “We found the leak at the tannery.”

Dickey, who also serves as the town’s safety officer, said that Tasman Leather Group recently converted to natural gas. The new system was releasing gas into the air.

Once the problem was corrected, roads were reopened because gas no longer was being released, he said. No one was sickened or injured by the leak.

Tasman Leather Group specialises in producing bovine side leather for the United States military and other customers.
