Volvo Cars sold 44,830 cars in May, down 25.5% compared with the same month in 2019. A total of 15,132 units were sold in China in the month, up 21.8% year-on-year. In the U.S., sales totalled 9,519 cars (-2.5%) and, in Europe, sales reached 14,965 cars in the month, down 49.6%. Between January and May, sales totalled 208,479 units, down 25% compared with the same period in 2019. In China, sales declined 7.1% in the first five months of the year, while in the U.S. sales were down 18.2% to 32,870 units. In Europe, sales declined 34.3%, year-on-year, in the first five months of 2020.

In May, the XC60 mid-size SUV was the top selling model for the company, followed by the compact XC40 SUV and the large XC90 SUV. During the month, SUVs accounted for 68.5% of Volvo Cars’ total sales, up from 61% in the same month of 2019. According to the carmaker, the share of its Recharge line-up of chargeable models doubled in the first five months, compared with the same period last year. Recharge is the overarching brand name for all chargeable Volvo models with a fully electric or plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The company has recently welcomed two new additions to its global design team; Claudia Braun from Daimler Benz, who is now the company’s new Vice President of Colour and Material Design, and Thomas Stovicek, who joined Volvo Cars from Facebook two years ago and was recently picked to lead Volvo Cars’ user experience (UX) and interaction design operations.
