A standout result for the year was the increase in popularity of the manufacturer’s Recharge line of electric of hybrid powertrain vehicles. Sales of Recharge models grew by 63.9% in 2021, while these vehicles made up 27% of the total sales volume for the year.

Online sales of Volvo cars jumped by 316% year-on-year, thanks to shifting consumer demand and a broadened market offering. For December, the company made 64,436 retail deliveries, a decline of 18.1% year-on-year, a result influenced primarily by component shortages and not weakened demand, according to Volvo.

The manufacturer sold 122,173 cars in the United States throughout 2021, an increase of 10.9% on 2020. Sales in China totalled 171,676 vehicles, an increase of 3% year-on-year. Meanwhile, in Europe, sales increased 1.8% over 2020 to 293,471 units.

The XC60 remains the best-selling Volvo model globally with 215,635 units sold in 2021, up from 191,696 in 2020. The XC40 follows this with 201,037 sold (185,406 in 2020), while the XC90 comes in third at 108,231 (92,458 in 2020).
