Organised by ILM in association with theSauerReport and sponsored by JBS Couros, the webinar will unpack how the leather industry can use science and data to turn around the negative narrative surrounding it. Dr Meyer and Dr Dietrich will provide an overview and key findings of the recent comparative FILK study between leather and nine alternative materials – including Kombucha, Muskin, Desserto, Appleskin, Vegea, Teak Leaf, Pinatex, SnapPap and PU artificial leather – and their characteristics and performance. They will explain the testing methods used and interpret the results and what this means for leather.

He completed postgraduate studies at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg in the field of process engineering. In 2002, he received his PhD from the TU Dresden, Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry, on the topic of “Thermal-mechanical digestion of bovine skin collagen”. Meyer joined the FILK Freiberg Institute in 1998. In 2001, he took over as head of the Department of Leather / Biopolymers and became Head of Research in 2018. Since 2020 he is heading FILK as Scientific Director and Managing Director and is responsible for all research activities and scientific work at the institute.
